L. Tom Perry on spiritual reminders

Elder L. Tom Perry (1922- ) has served as a member of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles since 1974.

"Could I offer this little suggestion to you? In the elevators in the Church Office Building we place scriptures and sayings of the prophets to make the time that people spend in the elevators productive as they ride up and down. This is an idea we could carry into our homes. We have an appliance we use all too frequently in our homes—the refrigerator. We need to place a sign on our refrigerators to elevate our thoughts. And by so doing, we could remind ourselves of the scriptures as we go about our daily duties—of who we are and what we represent. Could I suggest just a few scriptures to you for starters? The first is in the book of Matthew 5:43-44.... Maybe a second would be from Luke 6:35.... And in James 1:27.... Finally, display one of the great scriptures from the Book of Mormon, Moro. 7:47....

The Lord encouraged Joseph Smith: "And again, verily I say unto you, I would that ye should always remember, and always retain in your minds what those gifts are, that are given unto the church" (D&C 46:10) and to "treasure up in your minds continually the words of life" (D&C 84:85). Elder Perry gives a very practical suggestion of a way to help do that—take advantage of the obvious locations that we see often to post spiritual or scriptural reminders!

I appreciate the implied reward he mentions for this kind of action. There really is great peace and joy in focusing our minds on recognizing God's hand in our lives.
